More Than a Production: The Impact of Pathways

When we talk about Dear Evan Hansen, it would be easy to look at it simply as our next production. There is a cast, a creative team, rehearsals, costumes, music, lights, and eventually a few nights in front of an audience.

But for the students involved, the experience is much bigger than the show itself.

That's what Pathways is about.

Pathways creates opportunities for young people to challenge themselves, build confidence, develop new skills, connect with others, and experience things that can help shape who they become. The goal isn't to prepare every student for a career in the performing arts. It's to give them experiences that help prepare them for whatever comes next.

Learning Through Experience

A production like Dear Evan Hansen gives students the opportunity to be part of something that requires commitment, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and accountability.

They have to listen to one another. They have to learn how to receive feedback. They have to work through challenges. They have to show up for themselves and for the people around them.

Those are skills that matter whether a student eventually becomes an artist, a teacher, a doctor, a business owner, a parent, or anything else.

The stage simply gives them a place to practice those skills.

The People They Meet Matter, Too

One of the things we value most about Pathways is the opportunity to connect students with people who can expand their understanding of what's possible.

Through productions, mentorship, guest artists, leadership opportunities, and other experiences, students get to work with people who bring different perspectives, experiences, and expertise into the room.

Sometimes that connection sparks an artistic interest. Sometimes it introduces a student to a career they had never considered. Sometimes it simply gives them an adult outside of their immediate circle who believes in them.

All of those things matter.

Building Confidence That Travels With Them

We've seen students walk into an experience unsure of themselves and leave with a completely different sense of what they can do.

They learn how to speak up. They become more comfortable taking risks. They learn to work through frustration instead of giving up. They learn that their ideas have value and that they have something to contribute.

Those changes don't stay in the theatre.

They show up in classrooms, friendships, families, jobs, college, and the way young people begin to see themselves.

Why Dear Evan Hansen Matters

That is why this production is an important part of Pathways.

Yes, students are getting the chance to be part of a high-level theatrical production. But they're also being given a place to grow, to be challenged, to work with others, to learn from experienced professionals, and to discover something new about themselves.

For some, this may become a stepping stone toward a career in the arts.

For others, it may simply be one of the experiences that helps shape the person they become.

We don't need to know where every student's path will lead. We just want to make sure they have meaningful opportunities along the way.

That's the purpose of Pathways.

And that's why Dear Evan Hansen is more than a production.
